There is an abundance of holiday spirit during the month of November. Neatly tucked between the sugar-rush of Halloween and the shopping craze of Christmas, November has a plethora of events and special days, many of which are unknown to most of the world. Since Americans seem to spend an abundance of time thinking up ways to celebrate, it just makes sense that they would also have some strange things to celebrate – but look for a few noble reasons as well.

Monthly Celebrations in November

Some holidays are so large that they require more than one day – whole months are dedicated to them. For the most part, these kind of holidays are related to awareness or to educational promotions regarding these events. Native American Heritage Month, for instance, is to serve as a reminder of those who contributed so much to the heritage of a proud people and to the heritage of the country as a whole. Child Safety Protection Month is devoted to learning to anticipate and prevent accidents that can befall children.

Week-long celebrations in November include Chemistry Week, which is the first week in November and Game and Puzzle Week, which is the third week.

Sadie Hawkins Day was started by the Li'l Abner comic strip in November 15, 1937 which depicted "the homeliest gal in the hills", Sadie Hawkins and her father who was worried that his little girl would spend the rest of her life at home. Her father, Hekzebiah Hawkins was a prominent member of their town of Dogpatch and organized a day where the single women of the town would form a footrace and chase the single men of the town around until they were caught and married. Sadie Hawkins day later evolved into a day when school dances were held and girls were allowed to ask boys to the dance instead of waiting – as etiquette demanded – for boys to ask them.

  • Thanksgiving Day: Third Thursday of the month
  • Black Friday: The day after Thanksgiving – the biggest shopping day of the year
  • Buy Nothing Day: The day after Thanksgiving – not observed by many

National days around the world include Latvia National Day on November 18, Lebanon National Day on November 22, Albania National Day on November 28 and in Scotland on November 30 is St. Andrews Day.
